## Overview

## Everest Gokyo Lake Trek / Gokyo Ri Trekking

The Everest Gokyo Lake Trek, also known as the Gokyo Lakes | Gokyo Ri Trek, is considered one of the most beautiful and peaceful trekking routes in the Everest region of Nepal. This trek is an excellent alternative to the Everest Base Camp trek and is less crowded, making it ideal for travelers who want a quieter and more relaxing journey.

The trek is famous for the sacred Gokyo Lakes, which are important to both Hindus and Buddhists. These lakes are also among the highest freshwater lake systems in the world, and visiting them is a special and meaningful experience for many trekkers.

Most trekkers start in Kathmandu, where they prepare for the trek and fly to Lukla for the start of the trek. The trek begins from Lukla and continues through tiny villages, lush hills and valleys. The trail winds through the Sagarmatha National Park, with beautiful and diverse flora and fauna. Trekkers also pass through Sherpa villages and can visit monasteries and learn about the culture and traditions of the Sherpa people.

As the trek progresses, the trek becomes more spectacular with the views of some of the world's highest peaks. Visitors will see Mount Everest, Cho Oyu, Lhotse, and Gyachung Kang. Another highlight of the trek is the largest glacier in the Himalayas, the Ngozumpa Glacier. The Gokyo Lakes are also a major highlight, with the First, Second, Third, Fourth and Fifth Lakes. These blue lakes are surrounded by mountains, which reflect in them to form a stunning contrast of sunlight and the snow-capped mountains, along with the lakes.

After a few days of walking, trekkers will arrive at Gokyo Ri, which is 5,350 meters above sea level. Trekking Gokyo Ri is a highlight of the trek. Trekkers can enjoy panoramic views of the Himalayas - particularly during sunrise and sunset. Gokyo Ri offers the best views of Everest and other mountains in the Everest region. The tranquillity of Gokyo Valley makes this view even more beautiful.

The Everest Gokyo Lake Trek usually takes about 14 to 15 days to complete and is considered a moderate to challenging trek. It does not require technical climbing skills, but trekkers need to be physically fit and well-prepared. The long walking days and high altitude can be difficult, but the experience is very rewarding.

In conclusion, the Everest Gokyo Lake Trek is not just a trekking journey. It is a journey full of natural beauty, cultural experience, and personal achievement. The calm lakes, high mountains, and peaceful trails make this trek a unique and unforgettable experience in the Himalayas.

## **Things to know before this trek**

- You must have a guide in this journey because it is a safety and permit requirement. You cannot trek solo.
- You will walk at a high altitude, so do not rush, drink plenty of water, about 3-4 litres.
- Never ignore minor headaches, take enough rest and carry medications you may need.
- Prepare your body to endure physical activities, especially distant and inclined walking.
- Accommodation is decent, simple. You’ll need to purchase additional luxuries like Wi-Fi and hot showers. As you go higher, these services get less available and may cost slightly higher.

- Being able to communicate, socialize, understand, and respect will do you good, so be prepared.

## **Route overview**

The Everest Gokyo Lake Trek is a well-known trekking route in the Khumbu region of Nepal, offering a peaceful and scenic journey through the Himalayan landscape. The adventure begins after arriving at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, where trekkers are transferred to a hotel in the tourist area. Likely Thamel, a popular tourist hub filled with trekking shops, cafés, and travel services.

After completing necessary preparations in Kathmandu, trekkers take an early morning flight to Lukla, the gateway to the Everest region. During peak trekking seasons, flights may operate from Ramechhap, requiring a road journey from Kathmandu before the mountain flight. The flight to Lukla is short but highly scenic, offering aerial views of hills, rivers, and distant Himalayan peaks before landing at one of the world’s most adventurous airports.

The actual trek begins from Lukla, where the trail gradually descends into green valleys and small settlements along the Dudh Koshi River Valley. The route passes through traditional Sherpa villages, prayer flags, small tea houses, and suspension bridges before reaching Phakding, a quiet riverside village surrounded by pine forests. This section introduces trekkers to the calm rhythm of mountain life and the natural beauty of the Everest region.

From Phakding, the trail continues alongside the river, gradually ascending toward Namche Bazaar, a key acclimatisation stops. During acclimatisation, short hikes are often made to nearby viewpoints such as Syangboche and the Everest View Hotel, which provides wide panoramic views of surrounding peaks like Ama Dablam and Thamserku on clear days.

After acclimatization at Namche, the trail moves deeper into the Gokyo Valley. The route becomes quieter and more remote, **passing through alpine forests, yak grazing areas, and small settlements such as Kyangjuma, Dole, and Machhermo**. These areas offer a more peaceful trekking experience, with fewer crowds.

From Machhermo, the journey continues toward the highlight of the trek, the beautiful Gokyo Lakes. As trekkers enter the Gokyo Valley, they are greeted by a chain of turquoise glacial lakes surrounded by snowy peaks and rocky landscapes.

One of the most important and rewarding sections of the trek is the ascent to Gokyo Ri (approximately 5,360 meters). The climb is steep but highly rewarding. From the summit, trekkers can see major Himalayan giants, including [Mount Everest,](https%252525252525252525252525252525252525252525252525252525252525252525252525253A%252525252525252525252525252525252525252525252525252525252525252525252525252F%252525252525252525252525252525252525252525252525252525252525252525252525252Fhttps%252525252525252525252525252525252525252525252525252525252525252525252525253A%252525252525252525252525252525252525252525252525252525252525252525252525252F%252525252525252525252525252525252525252525252525252525252525252525252525252Fsunriseadventuretrek.com%252525252525252525252525252525252525252525252525252525252525252525252525252Fblogs%252525252525252525252525252525252525252525252525252525252525252525252525252Fwhere-is-mount-everest-located-nepal-india-or-china) Cho Oyu, Lhotse, and surrounding ranges, along with the vast Ngozumpa Glacier stretching across the valley.

After spending time in the Gokyo region, the return journey follows the same route back through Machhermo, Dole, and Namche Bazaar, allowing trekkers to experience the landscape from a different perspective during descent. The trail gradually leads back to Lukla, passing familiar villages, rivers, and suspension bridges along the way. From Lukla, trekkers take a flight back to Kathmandu, marking the end of the trekking adventure.

Finally, back in Kathmandu, trekkers can rest, explore cultural sites, or enjoy the lively streets of Thamel before preparing for their onward journey. The trek ends as a complete Himalayan experience filled with natural beauty, cultural interaction, and unforgettable mountain views.

## **Best time for the Everest Gokyo Lake Trek / Gokyo Ri Trekking**

The best time to visit or trek the Everest Gokyo Lake** **is during the time of spring season (March – May), as the weather is mild and the rhododendron forests are blooming along with the snow-capped mountains. In this season, the skies are clearer, allowing you to have beautiful and panoramic views of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse and Ama Dablam. And trekkers can also find alpine flowers along the trail. The temperature ranges from 5°C -15 °C on average in the Gokyo areas, whereas during the night, the temperature gets freezing, around 0°C.  Compared to the autumn season, there is generally less crowd, making it more of a peaceful, intimate and tranquil trekking experience.

Another good time for the Everest Gokyo Lake Trek** **would be during the autumn season (September – November). So, during autumn, the weather is pretty stable with crisp air and still retains post-monsoon freshness. Nevertheless, the mountain visibility is excellent in this season too. The temperature in Gokyo Valley ranges between 5–15°C**,** while it can drop to around freezing (i.e., -5°C to 5°C)**.** This season offers clear views of peaks such as Mount Everest, Cho Oyu, and Lhotse.

Therefore, spring and autumn are considered safe, scenic, and enjoyable trekking conditions for this journey.

## **Least ideal time for the Everest Gokyo Lake Trek / Gokyo Ri Trekking**

Trekking to Everest Gokyo Lake during the Monsoon Season (June - August) is not considered an ideal time to trek/ visit. During this time, the region experiences heavy rainfall and cloudy skies, causing the trails to be slippery and reducing visibility of the wonderful views. Natural disasters like landslides and floods make trekking dangerous, too. Additionally, the trail conditions are more challenging, and some teahouses may not be available or closed. Sometimes, such teahouses may be crowded with stranded trekkers. In the lower elevations, the temperature ranges from 10–20 °C, whereas 0–5 °C at higher elevations.

The winter season (December – February) is also considered one of the least ideal seasons to trek to Everest Gokyo Lake. It is less favourable due to very cold temperatures, strong winds and snow at high altitudes. It will be peaceful and less crowded, but the night duration is very long and freezing cold. Just like that, major high-altitude lodges remain closed, making the trek more difficult and riskier. The temperature ranges from 0-10 °C at lower elevations, whereas -15–5 °C at higher elevations in the Gokyo valley.

## **Situation during peak hours or season**

During the autumn season (September – November) and the spring season (March – May), the trail is heavily crowded, especially in the popular trail sections like** Namche Bazaar, the Dudh Koshi River Valley, and onward to Dole, Machhermo, and the Gokyo Lakes**. Likewise, due to the same reason, you would also need to wait at popular viewpoints and suspension bridges, teahouses and lodges are often fully booked. Therefore, most of the time, early reservations are needed to make out in this season. Despite the crowd, there are clear skies, the best weather and Himalayan views as visual rewards in this season. Hence, to make this time prolific, there will be more tourist services such as organized trekking groups, porter availability, wider food options and additional luxuries in the teahouses.

## **Situation during the off-season**

In the monsoon months (June-August) and winter (December-February), the trekking region is much quieter. Therefore, the trekking journey becomes a much more peaceful and solitary experience. The route from Lukla to Phakding, Namche Bazaar, Dole, Machhermo, and up to the Gokyo Valley becomes very quiet. If you’re trekking in winter, you’ll find peace and solitude, whereas in the monsoon it really gets difficult due to rain, slippery trails, or natural disaster risk.

High altitudes are covered in snow, and due to extreme coldness, trekking gets a lot more difficult and riskier. Likewise, there could be less service availability, such as lodges and teahouses at higher altitudes; porter availability and organized trekking groups may be limited. Despite the weather and service facilities at some places, trekkers who are interested or prepared can enjoy the pristine beauty of the Himalayas with minimal crowds.

Day 3 of your adventure begins in Kathmandu, where you get ready for your flight from Kathmandu to Lukla at an early hour. After your hotel breakfast you will go to the airport, where you will check-in for your fight to Lukla. The flight itself does not take long (generally in the range of 30-35 minutes), but provides you with an incredible view of the Himalayan snow-capped mountains as you fly high above and below. The journey also provides you with an unforgettable view of the majestic mountain ranges, valleys, and lakes below as you approach Lukla - the gateway to the Everest Region.

Upon arriving at your destination, Tenzing-Hillary Airport (the famous airport with the highly shortened and very exhilarating runway), you will begin your trek from Lukla. Beginning at a very slow downhill pace, your trek will take you through the Dudh Koshi river on a trail that connects you to the many small villages that line your way, reaching Thado Koshigaun, many of which have traditional rock & stone houses that support their inhabitants and provide them with shelter, as well as many stupas and beautifully carved prayer stones. After Thado Koshigaun, you eventually reach Phakding, trekking about 1-2 kilometres.

**About Lukla **

Located at an elevation of 2840 meters in the Khumbu area, Lukla is a small, busy village that serves as the main access point for those trekking to Everest Gokyo Lake. One of its most distinguished characteristics is the Tenzing-Hillary Airport, which features one of the world's shortest airstrips. Although it is tiny, there are many lodges and stores available for visitors' basic needs. Many trekkers will often "break" at Lukla to obtain the supplies for their trek (e.g., gear) and hire local porters. There are several cultural points of interest in Lukla, including monasteries and a Sherpa Museum where you can see Sherpa culture first-hand. A local township fee is also collected in Lukla to help raise funds for development in the Everest area.

**About Thado Koshigaon (2,750 m)**

Thado Koshigaon is a small, quiet village along the trekking path between Lukla and Phakding that serves as a convenient place for trekkers to stop for lunch. It offers a crucial break in the trek, allowing trekkers to rest before continuing onward. The tranquillity of Thado Koshigaon is ideal for relaxing while replenishing energy for the next part of the trek.

**About Phakding Village **

The village of Phakding is a renowned trekking location located at the foot of Mount Everest at a height of approximately 2610 meters. The village is commonly used as the first overnight stop for adventurers trekking to Base Camp on Everest's southern side, with several varying accommodation options available from cheap to nicer lodges that offer modern amenities. This site consists not only of many lodges but also has numerous local homes; the area is quite calm and has great views of the Dudh Koshi River which makes it a perfect place to rest following your first day of trekking. Visitors can also explore nearby monasteries or take short walks around the village until they continue on with their trekking adventure.

### Phakding – Namche Bazaar Trek

• Phakding → start trek → riverside forest trail
• Monjo → Sagarmatha National Park entry → permit check
• Jorsalle → last village before Namche → rest stop
• Suspension bridges → cross Dudh Koshi River → Hillary Bridge
• Final climb → steep uphill section → toughest part
• Everest view → first glimpse (weather dependent)
• Namche Bazaar → “Gateway to Everest” → overnight stay

The trek from Phakding to Namche is a really exciting journey. Trekkers are provided with lunch at the beginning, and then they proceed towards the trails. Along the trail, they go through various spots like Dudh Koshi River, Champute, Toktok, and Bengkar, each offering a peek at Sherpa life. Considering the path condition, it is relatively easy with gentle forest paths. The trail ascends towards Monjo, which is an entry point to Sagarmatha National Park. This is where the permits are checked. After authentication, you continue your journey to Jorsalle. This is the final village right before reaching Namche Bazar.

The trek continues after lunch through forested paths. In between, they cross several suspension bridges, including the famous Hillary Bridge. Followed by that bridge, there comes the hardest part of the day, as there is a steep uphill climb. The harder the climb, the better the rewards. By the time you are enjoying a glimpse of Mount Everest, you arrive in Namche Bazar without even realising it. Namche Bazar is also renowned as the “Gateway to Everest”, which is a vibrant Sherpa town and the main trading hub of Khumbu. Trekkers are set to stay overnight in this village for rest and acclimatisation before further ascent.

**About Jorsalle**

This is a village that lies right before Namche Bazar. It serves the purpose of lunch stops for trekkers as there are basic teahouses surrounded by beautiful green forests and river views. Jorsalle is a peaceful resting spot, after which the trail becomes steeper and more challenging toward Namche. Here, teahouses offer basic facilities with simple menus like Dal Bhat, Noodles, Soup, and hot drinks.

**About Namche Bazar**

It is a vibrant Sherpa village at an altitude of 3,440 m, commonly known as the gateway to the Everest base camp. In this village, trekkers usually stop over for acclimatisation and proper rest for the days ahead. They can spend that day exploring the main trading hub of the Khumbu region and the local vicinity. From this village, trekkers can have beautiful views of Thamserku and Kongde Ri. They can also witness and experience the culture, traditions, markets and history of the Sherpa people.

Despite the remoteness and the altitude, Namche Bazar is still well-equipped with facilities. Trekkers can find their requirements and needs, such as Rastriya Banijya Bank, ATMs, Khumbu money exchange, pharmacies, pubs, pool houses, art galleries and souvenir shops. In case of an emergency, trekkers may also buy or rent trekking equipment from various trekking gear outlets. Wi-Fi are mostly available in the lodges with minimum charges.

### Acclimatization & Exploration in Namche Bazaar

On the fifth day of your journey, you stay in Namche Bazaar for acclimatisation. It is very important and helpful for tourists to adjust to the altitude and reduce the risk of altitude sickness before continuing the trek to higher elevations. Namche Bazaar is a key stop and one of our highlights of the trip. As written above it is a small Sherpa village in the middle of the Himalayas offering mesmerising views of the panoramic mountains such as Mount Everest and Ama Dablam on clear days.

This day isn’t just about views of the mountains; it is also about cultural and lifestyle exploration, along with short hikes to nearby villages for better acclimatisation. One of the most common hikes on this day for the trekkers is the hike to Khumjung village. In this village, visitors can experience traditional Sherpa culture, life and visit the local monastery. Apart from this, trekkers can also visit the Sherpa museum in Namche Bazaar, which reflects and depicts historical artefacts, mountaineering history and cultural items of the Khumbu region.

In the evening, after all the activities in the day, trekkers can visit the local areas of Namche Bazaar. They can walk through markets, but stuff. They can even try local teahouses and cafes, making themselves comfortable. As tourists, you guys may also do some local interaction, socialise with them and experience the hospitality and gratitude among the local folks towards their guests.

### Trek to Phortse Thanga (3,680m) – Approx. 5 Hours

• Namche Bazaar → start trek → descent begins toward valley
• Trail section → quieter Khumbu route → fewer trekkers
• Mountain views → Ama Dablam, Thamserku visible en route
• Forest path → rhododendron, pine, juniper sections → yak grazing areas
• Terrain → stone stairways and narrow mountain trails → moderate challenge
• Phortse Thanga route → transition toward Gokyo Valley region

Day 6, the trek continues from Namche Bazaar toward Phortse Thanga. The trail gradually descends and then follows the side of the valley, moving through quieter sections of the Khumbu region with fewer trekkers compared to the main Everest Base Camp route. Along the trail, trekkers occasionally get to view the peaks like Ama Dablam and Thamserku. The path also passes through dense rhododendron forests, pine and juniper trees, and open yak grazing fields. As you go along the trail, it gets slightly challenging as it includes stone stairways and narrow mountain paths. This trek forms part of the transition route toward the Gokyo Valley

**About Phortse Thanga**

Phortse Thanga is a small Sherpa village on the banks of the Dudh Koshi River. It is famous for its traditional mountain lifestyle. Many people from Phortse village are experienced mountaineers and trekking guides, contributing significantly to Himalayan expeditions. It is also renowned for its peaceful environment and beautiful natural components such as waterfalls and forested slopes. There are local teahouses where trekkers can rest, eat and experience the calm atmosphere of the valley.

### Phortse Thanga to Machhermo (4470 meters) – 5 Hours

• Phortse Thanga → ascent begins → upper Khumbu Valley
• Dole & Luza → small teahouse villages → rest stops
• Trail → Dudh Koshi River section → bridges and streams
• Machhermo → acclimatisation stop → mountain views
• Overnight stay → teahouse rest

From Phortse Thanga, the journey gradually ascends to Upper Khumbu Valley. As the trekkers get higher, the trail gets steeper and more challenging. The trail walks you through alpine landscapes, open valleys and areas with fewer trees, along with small Sherpa settlements such as Dole and Luzza, which consist of simple teahouses for essential rests. The path also follows sections of the Dudh Koshi River Valley, with streams, waterfalls, and suspension bridges adding natural beauty to the trek.

The journey continues through increasingly rugged terrain with wide valley views and distant snow-covered peaks before reaching Machhermo. Therefore, Machhermo serves as a crucial resting point before reaching the Gokyo Lakes. It serves as an acclimatisation point to the trekkers which is surrounded by wonderful Himalayas such as peaks like Kyajo Ri and Machhermo that offer a peaceful environment with basic teahouse facilities. Upon arrival, trekkers rest and stay overnight at Machhermo.

**About Dole village**

Dole is an important stop on the Gokyo Valley trekking route, mainly known as a rest and acclimatisation point between Namche Bazaar and Machhermo. It is located at a higher altitude where trekkers begin to feel the difference in breathing thin air, making it a useful place for gradual altitude adjustment. Dole is also famous for its yak pastures and high altitude views with open valley views and green hillsides in the summer months. Dole has a few basic teahouses and is a good option for a quiet night stay with trekkers getting a taste of the remote side of the Khumbu.

**About Luzza village**

Luza is a very small and remote settlement on the trail between Dole and Machhermo. It is primarily important as a waypoint for trekkers, but it serves as a crucial place to break the steep uphill trek. Luza is considered remote and offers a glimpse into the traditional Sherpa culture, with few houses and teahouses.  Luza is known for its isolated mountain setting and traditional Sherpa lifestyle, with very limited houses and basic teahouse facilities. It provides a sense of remoteness and tranquillity, making trekkers feel as if they are at the heart of the Himalayas while climbing towards the higher parts of the region, such as Machhermo and the Gokyo Lakes.

### Machhermo to Gokyo (4,790m)

• Machhermo → start trek → Gokyo Valley ascent
• Trail → Dudh Koshi River → alpine meadows
• Phanga & Longpongo → small stops → glacier views
• Terrain → rocky paths → Ngozumpa Glacier area
• Gokyo Lakes → first sight → dramatic scenery
• Gokyo (4,790m) → arrive → overnight stay

After Machhermo, we continue our trek along the trail through the Gokyo Valley. The route steadily ascends, tracing the Dudh Koshi River, and we walk through open alpine meadows with isolated yak pastures and streams. As we ascend, the landscape becomes more rugged, and the air thinner, as we are moving into the higher reaches of the Himalaya.

In the way, we come across small tea houses like Phanga and Longpongo, where the valley widens and offers stunning views of glacial landscapes and snowy peaks in the distance. The mountains, such as Cho Oyu and other giants, become more prominent, and the walk is both challenging and rewarding. The path is mostly gentle but includes a constant ascent, with occasional rocky and uneven ground.

As we push forward, we near the Gokyo lake system and cross rocky trails and glacial rivers formed by the Ngozumpa Glacier. The terrain becomes more rugged and harsh as the altitude increases. Soon, the first glimpse of Gokyo Lakes comes into view, with the third Gokyo Lake nearby further enhancing the magic of the valley.

From here, we climb a little further to reach Gokyo village (4,790m) by the beautiful lake. The village is surrounded by the majestic peaks of Cho Oyu, Kangtega, Cholatse and Taboche, making this one of the most breathtaking mountain panoramas in the Everest region. After a 4-5 hour walk from Machhermo, we arrive at Gokyo, where we rest and spend the night in a teahouse.

**About Phanga **

It is a small resting point between Machhermo and Gokyo which is located in the upper Dudh Koshi valley. Its primary purpose is to provide the necessary stop for trekkers as the trail begins to gain altitude. This place is surrounded by beautiful snow-capped mountains and peaks.

It is just a resting point, meaning there is no permanent settlement, though it definitely provides a peaceful spot to catch your breath and enjoy those tranquil Himalayas before continuing back to your expedition.

**About Longpongo**

Longpongo is a beautiful high-altitude section in the trail that lies closer to the upper part of the valley. It is renowned for its wide glacial streams and open rocky terrain. Trekkers often pass through this spot before getting to the Gokyo lakes. In this particular trail, trekkers get to witness dashing views of peaks and glacier-fed waters, which depict the raw and authentic beauty and vividness of the Himalayan nature. Therefore, this part is capable of making the trekker's journey way more memorable and rejuvenating on the way to Gokyo.

### Gokyo Ri Ascent and Return – Stunning Himalayan Views.

• Gokyo → early start → Gokyo Ri climb
• Trail → steep ascent → rocky path
• Views → Gokyo Valley, lakes, glacier
