## **Route Overview**

First, you reach Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. Next, you fly from Kathmandu to Suketar Taplejung, the beginning point of the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trekking. When you reach Taplejung, the actual trekking will start. The path gradually starts passing through remote Eastern regions of Nepal with various villages such as Mitlung, Chirwa, and Sekathum. The trail then leads you through rivers, forests, and several suspension bridges.

Next, the trail becomes more difficult as you continue to walk through various terrains, including Amjilosa and Gyabla, both being dense forests. After this comes another village, Ghunsa, which is considered to be the most important stop in the trek.

Trekkers usually stay at Ghunsa for a day to acclimatize and then start heading towards Kambachen, which has a more rugged and snowy terrain.

From Kambachen, you continue your way towards Lhonak, which is a high-altitude settlement with vast views of the Himalayan range. This place is relatively colder and rocky.

In the end, you make an effort to move closer to Pangpema, which is the North Base Camp of Mount Kanchenjunga. It provides spectacular views of enormous glaciers and mountains.

While returning back from the trekking site, the same trail is followed in reverse order so that you can enjoy the natural beauty of these areas once again.

### **The ideal time to visit KBC**

For the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek, the best time of visiting is the autumn season (September to November). The weather at this time is clear and stable, and there will be no rain. Moreover, days will be warmer and more comfortable, whereas nights will be quite chilly near the base camp. Autumn is the most popular trekking season; thus, you might see some other trekkers, but the path will remain peaceful as compared to any other trek.

Spring (March to May) is also another favourable time to visit this region. There is pleasant weather, clear skies, and magnificent mountain views in this season. However, it is slightly less busy as compared to autumn, making it a more enjoyable trip. Moreover, in spring, you will see numerous flowering rhododendron trees along with beautiful natural greenery.

### **Least ideal time to visit KBC**

The least ideal time to go for the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is during the monsoon season (June to August). The region experiences a lot of rain at this time, which makes the trails muddy and slippery to hike. There is also an increased likelihood of landslides within the lower areas, which might pose some dangers. Moreover, the presence of clouds obstructs mountain views and reduces visibility. However, the upside of this time is that the area turns very green and fresh, and very few trekkers use the route, hence it becomes quiet.

Another less favourable period for visiting KBC is the winter season (December to February). The temperatures become extremely cold and heavy snowfall might block part of the trail. Thus, hiking might become very challenging and dangerous at times, but the upside to this is the spectacular views of the clear mountains and empty paths devoid of crowds. Nevertheless, because of the weather and accessibility issues, the season is recommended for experienced trekkers only.

## **Situation During Peak Season to **Kanchenjunga trek

During peak trekking seasons (mainly Autumn and Spring), the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek becomes more active but still not very crowded compared to popular routes like Everest or Annapurna. You will meet other trekkers on the trail, especially around villages like Ghunsa and Kambachen, but overall, the region still feels quiet and remote.

Tea houses within the area will be functioning and open to visitors; however, they may be fully occupied in certain stopping points. Thus, it is advisable to book your accommodation before setting out for the journey. The climate will be favorable, and mountain views will be clearly visible.

Trails will be in good condition to allow easy movement along the path. The Kanchenjunga area is not commercialized, and therefore, it will retain its natural feeling despite having more people within the path.

### **During the off-season**

During the off-season (monsoon: June to August, winter: December to February), the area becomes very muddy because of the high amounts of rain in the monsoon season, and also the region experiences extreme cold in winter, which causes heavy snowfall to block part of the trail. However, mountain views will be obstructed during the monsoon, while the region looks fresh and green during all off-seasons.

In winter, the weather is extremely cold and snowfall can block some parts of the trail, and a few tea houses may be closed. However, on clear days, the mountains look very sharp and stunning, and the whole region feels raw and untouched. Nevertheless, the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is very quiet and much less crowded. This makes it a good choice for trekkers who prefer complete peace and solitude.

**Things to Consider About Transportation / Flights**

It takes several steps to reach the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek, and transportation planning is highly essential. To start with, you normally fly out of Kathmandu to Suketar. It is a more comfortable and faster flight, but it is subject to delays or cancellations because of weather conditions and especially in mountainous areas.

Suketar, which is the main starting point of the trek. The road trip provides an authentic feel of the eastern Nepal countryside. Transport schedules are not fixed all the time, and so it is always best to have additional buffer days in your plan. Transport services are likely to be in demand during peak trekking seasons, and therefore, it is advisable to book tickets ahead of time. Therefore, the flexibility in timing is important when planning the trip.

**About Kathmandu to Suketar flights**

The Kathmandu to Suketar trip is one of the fastest routes to the starting point of the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek. The Suketar Airport is located in Taplejung, which is the gateway to the Kanchenjunga region.

The aeroplane ride is quick and provides a comfortable alternative to the lengthy road trip. It assists trekkers to save time and energy by reaching eastern Nepal quicker before commencing the trek. The service, however, relies heavily on the weather conditions, and flights may not always be regular.

After reaching Suketar, the walking experience starts soon after, and you start taking a step towards the neighboring villages and enter the isolated mountain tracks of the Kanchenjunga region officially.

## **Possible Problems During Transportation / Flights**

Transportation is unpredictable at times when one is going to the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek. The bad weather, especially during the monsoon or winter seasons, can cause delays or cancellations of [Kathmandu](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kathmandu) to Suketar flights. This may influence your general trekking timetable and might need additional buffer days.

Travel time may take more time than it is supposed to take, and delays are frequent. Due to these uncertainties, you should have a loose itinerary, have more days in your schedule plan, and neglect strict schedules. Preparation against delays will contribute to minimizing stress during the trip.

### Flight to Suketar, then move to Jogidanda - Kanchenjunga Views and Limbu Culture

• Kathmandu → early morning flight → Suketar → panoramic views of eastern hills, forests, rhododendron ridges
• Suketar (≈2,580 m) → land → begin trek on ridge trail → gradual walk through forested paths
• Forest trail → small Limbu settlements → experience local culture, traditions, mountain lifestyle
• Ridge walk → clear mountain views (Mt. Kanchenjunga & Mt. Jannu)
• Jogidanda → arrive → overnight stay in simple trekking lodge → meals included

In the morning, we take a flight in Kathmandu to Suketar after breakfast. We can have panoramic views of the eastern hills, forests, and rhododendron-covered ridges, particularly during the clear weather, during the flight.

Once the plane has landed at Suketar, the rest of the journey is done on foot by a ridge path at approximately 2,580 meters above sea level. The route passes through woods and small Limbu settlements, where we can experience the local culture, traditions and the simple life in the mountains.

The first place of our overnights is in the locality of Jogidanda. This is where we can have our first clear day glimpses of Mount Kanchenjunga and Mt. Jannu. We have breakfast, lunch and dinner and spend the night in a simple trekking lodge.

**About Jogidanda**

Jogidanda is a small stopping point on the early part of the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek route, located in the Taplejung region. It is not a major village, but more of a quiet settlement or camping area used by trekkers while moving deeper into the mountains. The place is surrounded by hills, forested slopes, and traditional rural landscapes of eastern Nepal.

This area is mainly inhabited by local Limbu communities, so trekkers can get a first introduction to their culture, lifestyle, and hospitality. Facilities here are very basic, usually limited to simple lodges or camping arrangements. Jogidanda is mainly used as a resting point before continuing further into more remote villages along the trail, making it part of the gradual transition from road-access areas to the deep trekking region.

### Jogidanda to Chirwa Trek: A Scenic Jungle Journey

• Jogidanda → start descent → forest trail begins → cardamom, bamboo, mixed jungle
• Dense forest → quieter paths → gradual walk → natural streams and small bridges
• Rural section → farmland → local farming settlements → easy ups & downs
• Final stretch → approach Chirwa village → teahouses and lodges → overnight stay

At Jogidanda, the trail leads off slowly down into the lower, more productive part of the Kanchenjunga Base Camp area. The path is further forested and quieter, traversing thick vegetation such as cardamom plants, bamboo and mixed jungles. The atmosphere is distant and silent with fewer settlements along the path.

As the journey goes on, the path features little streams, hanging bridges, and woody paths. We cross rural and farmlands in between, with locals engaged in traditional farming. It is a relatively easy walking day, with a mix of easy ups and downs, and is not very technical.

At last, we arrive at Chirwa, a small village with teahouses and lodges. It is a significant resting place on the trail, where one can take a break before proceeding further into the more isolated mountain area. The life here is basic and is closely related to farming, which provides an excellent impression of the rural culture of the people in the eastern part of Nepal.

**About Chirwa**

Chirwa is a small and peaceful village in the lower section of the Kanchenjunga Base Camp trek route. . It is among the initial good resting points where trekkers are able to have a rest after hiking along the forest trails, rivers, and isolated rural villages. The village is surrounded by greenery and hills, giving it a calm and natural atmosphere.

The settlement is equipped with simple lodges and teahouses which offer accommodation and food to trekkers. The pace of life here is sluggish and has a strong relationship with agriculture where majority of the locals rely on farming as their means of livelihood. Chirwa is also the start of a further, more distant trekking stretch ahead, where the paths grow less busy, and the sceneries more rugged. It is a nice place to relax, rest and get ready for the further days of more serious mountain hiking.

### Chirwa to Sekathum Trek: A 6-Hour Forest Journey

• Chirwa → start trail → follow river valley into lower Kanchenjunga region
• Forest section → bamboo, cardamom bushes, dense jungle → secluded natural environment
• River route → multiple suspension bridges → cross fast-flowing rivers and streams
• Hillside paths → rocky trails → gentle ups & downs → few tea huts/rest stops
• Remote section → fewer settlements → quieter surroundings as altitude changes
• Sekathum → arrive after 5–6 hours → teahouses and basic lodges → important rest stop before higher trek sections

Starting at Chirwa, the trail will lead into the lower valleys of the Kanchenjunga Base Camp area, taking the river along the greater part of the route. The route is enclosed by a lot of flora and fauna and the bamboo forests, cardamom bushes and the dense jungle vegetation make the walk seem secluded and wild.

On the way, the road goes along a series of suspension bridges over swiftly moving rivers and streams. The trail is also equipped with small rocky paths cut along the hillside, with slight ups and downs. Between these, however, there are here and there a few little resting-places or tea-huts used by the trekkers, but there are very few settlements, and the country grows stiller and stiller as we proceed.

In approximately 5-6 hours of walking, we arrive at the small village of Sekathum, where teahouses and simple lodging are provided. It is a key point of rest before getting into the more isolated and elevated part of the trek, where one can have a rest and get ready to proceed with the second part of the journey.

**About Sekathum**

Sekathum is a tiny riverside village in the Kanchenjunga Base Camp trail trekking path with steep hills, thick vegetation and flowing river water. It is a serene place of rest following the arduous forest trail of Chirwa, and a serene natural habitat with simple teahouses and bare lodges to eat and sleep. Facilities are not too many but sufficient to allow trekkers to rest and rejuvenate before proceeding with the journey. Sekathum is also where the trail starts to seem more isolated and difficult as it slowly shifts to areas of the trek that are of higher altitudes.

### Sekathum to Amjilosa Trek (5 hours)

• Sekathum → start after breakfast → cross suspension bridge → begin steep forest climb
• Narrow trail → dense jungle → quiet valley → river sounds along the route
• Midway → Solima → lunch stop → short rest point for energy recovery
• Continue from Solima → rocky forest path → gradual ascent through thick vegetation
• Gorge section → climb above river valley → reach Amjilosa village
• Amjilosa → small settlement → basic lodges & Bhattis (local shops) → overnight stay with meals

The trek starts with a suspension bridge across the river after an early breakfast at Sekathum, and a steady climb through thick forest. The path is very narrow, very steep, and leads farther in a silent valley of dense growth and the murmur of running water.

In a few hours more, we walk into Solima, a small resting-place on the road, where we have lunch. This is a rest to enable us to rejuvenate before the mountainous trek in the wooded and rocky trails.

The path, which we follow, beginning at Solima, leads through trees and rough ground, till we come to Amjilosa, above the gorge. Upon arrival, we discover a small village comprising some houses and basic local stores referred to as Bhattis, where trekkers can stay and socialise with locals. We spend the night in a simple trekking lodge including meals.

**About Solima**

Solima is a little resting place on the Kanchenjunga Base Camp trekking path, between Sekathum and Amjilosa. It is serves as a trekker lunch-stop following a couple of hours of uphill trudging through thick forest and gravel paths. Solima refers to a small resting spot that is found on the Kanchenjunga Base Camp trekking trail, between Sekathum and Amjilosa. It is primarily a lunching spot for trekkers at the end of an uphill hiking through thick forest and unmarked paths.

**About Amjilosa**

Amjilosa is a tiny hill village located on the trekking trail to Kanchenjunga Base Camp which is surrounded by deep forest and steep hills. It is colder in the air and is more distant and remote, and is generally approached after a long uphill effort on the part of Sekathum. It has some simple teahouses and food and lodging overnight with limited facilities. The start of a more isolating and rough part of the journey also happens with Amjilosa as the track moves further into the mountains.

### Amjilassa to Kyapar Trek: A 7-Hour Journey

• Amjilosa → start gradual ascent → thick bamboo, rhododendron & oak forests
• Forest trail → small waterfalls, grassy patches → quiet and scenic walk
• Steeper section → valley climb above Ghunsa Khola → increasingly challenging terrain
• Pass Sherpa settlements → Gyabla area → observe Buddhist culture & mountain lifestyle
• Scenic surroundings → forested hills & terraced slopes → peaceful environment
• Kyapar → arrive after ~7 hours → overnight stay in lodge → meals included → important rest point

Starting at Amjilosa, the path leads further into the Kanchenjunga Base Camp area, slowly ascending, passing through thick bamboo, rhododendron, and oak forests. The trail goes over the random grass and small falls, building a quiet yet gradually difficult hiking experience.

The path grows stiffer and steeper as the journey proceeds, and it leads up the valley above the Ghunsa Khola. On the way, we pass by small Sherpa villages, including the surroundings of Gyabla, where we will be able to see local Buddhist culture and traditional mountain life. The environment is serene and picturesque, with the landscape being dominated by forested hills and terraced slopes.

Some 7 hours of walking bring us to Kyapar. We have an overnight stay at Kyapar. Here, meals are provided and this place serves as a good resting point.

**About Ghunsa Khola**

Ghunsa Khola is a very strong mountain river which cuts across the middle of the Kanchenjunga Base Camp trekking area and dominates most of the valley scenery between villages and forest tracks. The river is parallel to a number of trekking paths, such as the one leading to Amjilosa, Kyapar, and other higher settlements, and thus it is a natural guide at all times during the journey.

It is often crossed by trekkers on suspension bridges and is dramatic with views of the deep valley below. Ghunsa Khola is also enclosed in dense forest, waterfalls and slopes of rocky rocks, and it also brings beauty and difficulty to the trek, the wild and untouched nature of the region.

**About Kyapar**

Kyapar is a remote and small village that lies along the trekking path to the Kanchenjunga Base Camp in a forested region of mountainous terrain. It contains simple lodges and very minimal facilities, serving principally as a rest-house and place of overnight stay to trekkers. The space is much more remote and cold, and rougher, a significant shift to the elevated and more demanding parts of the journey.

### Kyapar to Ghunsa Trek: A 6-Hour Terrace & River Journey

• Kyapar → start easy section → gentle ascent with flat terrace walking
• Trail → forested paths → peaceful natural surroundings → Ghunsa Khola sound below
• Cultural zone → Tibetan-influenced villages → traditional houses & lifestyle
• Scenic walk → mix of forest and open landscapes → steady comfortable pace
• Ghunsa → arrive after ~6 hours → well-developed village → better lodges & facilities → overnight stay

This section of the journey feels more open and balanced compared to the earlier steep climbs. Leaving Kyapar, the trail slowly follows a gentle ascent along terraced landscapes, with sections of flat walking that make the pace more comfortable. The path is mostly natural, passing through forested stretches where the sound of the Kanchenjunga Base Camp region gradually blends with the flowing Ghunsa Khola below. The trail proceeds to places under the influence of Tibetan culture, whereby traditional houses and patterns of living are more conspicuous, and one gets a more cultural sense of the journey.

Eventually, you reach Ghunsa in about 6 hours. It is a well-known village in the region with better lodge facilities compared to the previous stops. This is the destination where we spend the night.

**About Ghunsa**

Ghunsa is a village that is of great significance in the Kanchenjunga Base Camp trekking path as the lodges and other facilities are much better than they were in other places. It is also an important acclimatisation centre of trekkers who are heading further into the region, with mountains and forests bordering the Ghunsa Khola valley.

The village is highly influenced by Tibet and this is evident in its monasteries, prayer flags, and traditional way of life. Ghunsa is a cultural and a resting spot of the trek as most locals rely on farming and yak herding.

### Ghunsa to Khambachen Trek: A Scenic Himalayan Journey

• Ghunsa → start northward ascent → follow Ghunsa Khola valley → wider but more isolated terrain
• Forest zone → pine & rhododendron → gradually replaced by rocky alpine landscape
• Cultural features → mani walls, chortens, small Tibetan-style settlements along the trail
• River crossing → suspension bridge → reach Rampuk Kharka (3,720 m) → lunch stop with open grassy views
• Dramatic scenery → steep cliffs, distant peaks, occasional landslide sections
• Khambachen → arrive → remote high-altitude village → simple lodges, cold winds, mountain surroundings → overnight stay

The path leaves Ghunsa and gradually ascends northwards, following the valley of Ghunsa Khola as the valley starts to become broader but even more lonely. The air becomes thinner and the landscape begins to vary; thick pine and rhododendron forests are replaced by bare rocky slopes and high alpine land within the Kanchenjunga Base Camp area.

It’s not just nature that changes along the way. Here and there we see many walls, chortens, and little Tibetan-inspired settlements, which break the silence of the mountains. Before reaching Rampuk Kharka (approximately 3,720m), a small, quiet grassy spot, the trail crosses a suspension bridge over the river, and here trekkers normally have lunch. Here, the scenery becomes a bit more dramatic, with steep bluffs and mountainous tops in the distance, and landslide patches here and there to remind you of the roughness of this place.

When Khambachen comes, it feels that it is a secret village in the depths of the mountains. There are simple lodges, chilly winds, and enormous heights everywhere that make it an actual high-altitude retreat prior to the trek, taking it even higher.

**About Rampuk Kharka (Lunch Stop)**

Rampuk Kharka is a large, grassy resting place on the Kanchenjunga Base Camp trekking route, around 3,700 meters. It serves mostly as a lunching place to trekkers who pass by Ghunsa and Khambachen. It is an open area with mountainous surrounds that provide expansive scenery of the valley and a serene rest area to resume the ascending journey.

**About Khambachen (High Altitude Village)**

Khambachen is an isolated high-altitude village on the Kanchenjunga Base Camp trail, with a dramatic backdrop of tall mountains and rocky terrain. It contains basic lodges that offer basic accommodation to trekkers as they venture farther into the Himalayas. The village is cold and still, and is a vital rest and acclimatisation point before moving on to more difficult and elevated parts of the expedition.

### Rest in Khambachen: Explore Mount Jannu Views

In the region of Kanchenjunga Base Camp, today is a rest and acclimatisation day, and the village of Khambachen, high in the mountains, is quiet. This rest period allows the body to adapt to the thin air after days of constant walking and a gradual increase in elevation and rejuvenates energy to continue the next parts of the journey. The environment is chilly, serene and is dominated by the Himalayan peaks.

The highlight of the day is the spectacular view of Mount Jannu which can be easily seen on the village on clear days. Trekkers normally have short strolls in the surroundings, investigate surrounding ascents, or just relax and have a view of the spectacular mountainous landscape.  It is a relaxing yet significant day that will even out rest against some light activity in order to aid in appropriate acclimatisation prior to proceeding onward to higher altitudes.

### Khambachen to Lhonak: Kanchenjunga Views and Trekking.

• Khambachen → start ascent → enter the higher alpine zone of the Kanchenjunga Base Camp region
• Vegetation fades → rocky terrain, barren slopes, desert-like landscape → yak herder areas
• Terrain → loose rocks, landslide-prone sections → rugged high-altitude walking
• Glacier zone → pass northwestern side of Kanchenjunga Glacier → wide glacial valley opens up
• Landscape → sandy plains, silence, strong winds → vast open mountain environment
• Lhonak → arrive → small stone-hut settlement in open valley
• Views → Wedge Peak (6,750m), Mera Peak (6,344m), Nepal Peak (6,910m), Twins (7,351m) → overnight stay in basic lodge

The route exits Khambachen and slowly enters a higher-altitude region in the area of the Base Camp of Kanchenjunga. Plants are swiftly wiped out, and in their place are rocky hills, desert-like stretches, interspersed with yak herder settlements. The atmosphere is thinner, and the environment becomes more distant and open.

Passing through rugged terrain, with loose rocks and places of landslides, the path traverses the northwestern side of the Kanchenjunga Glacier. The valley leads to a broad open plain of glacial formations and sandy plains, to which the only sound audible is the wind and the echoes of mountains far in the distance.

Lhonak is lastly seen in the form of a small group of stone huts in a great open valley. Here, the panorama incorporates the high peaks which include Wedge Peak (6,750m), Mera Peak (6,344m), Nepal Peak (6,910m) and the twins (7,351m), and it is one of the most spectacular high-altitude viewpoints in the whole trek.

**About Lhonak**

On the Kanchenjunga Base Camp trekking route Lhonak is one of the highest and most distant villages, situated in a large, open valley close to the Kanchenjunga Glacier. The camp has a basic collection of stone huts inhabited by trekkers and the occasional expedition groups. Facilities are extremely sparse but it is a very significant resting and acclimatisation point before proceeding any further towards the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp. Lhonak is among the most dramatic and memorable destinations in the trek because of the views of the surrounding huge peaks and glaciers.

### Lonak to Pang Pema: Kanchenjunga Panorama Trek

• Lhonak → start early after breakfast → enter high-altitude wilderness zone
• Trail → short but challenging → thin air, strong winds, high elevation
• Glacial valley → rocky moraine, barren terrain → almost no vegetation
• Landscape → wide open alpine basin → dramatic Himalayan views on all sides
• Pang Pema (North Base Camp) → arrive → simple hut at base of towering peaks
• Views → Mount Kanchenjunga panorama and surrounding Himalayan giants → key viewpoint of the trek → overnight stay in lodge

Following an early breakfast at Lhonak, the trail goes further into the wilderness of the high-altitude region of Kanchenjunga Base Camp. The hike is not so long but hard because of the high altitude and thin air. The trail runs over a broad glacial valley consisting of rocky moraine, barren landscapes, and powerful winds, almost no vegetation is present.

The landscape gets more expansive and dramatic as the journey continues, with the Himalayan mountains towering on the horizon. At last, we arrive in Pang Pema (Kanchenjunga North Base Camp), the summit of the expedition, where a simple hut is in front of an unforgettable sight of Mount Kanchenjunga and the other mountains that are sharply visible above the valley. It is among the most classic perspectives of the whole journey. Having spent some time at Pang Pema and taking in the panoramic views.

**About Pang Pema**

Pang Pema is the peak of trekking in the Kanchenjunga region with an elevation of approximately 5, 140 meters. It is the North Base Camp of Mount Kanchenjunga, which also gives the closest yet the most dramatic view of the third-highest peak in the world.

Pang Pema is a remote and harsh area, but its greatest success among the trekkers is the spectacular panoramic views. In this perspective, you are able to observe dramatic mountains around the Kanchenjunga massif, which is indeed a highlight of the whole trekking experience. It is usually visited as a day hike from Lhonak due to the lack of permanent accommodation at such an extreme altitude.

### Pang Pema to Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek (7 Hours)

• Pang Pema → start ascent → short but strenuous climb due to high altitude
• Trail → glacial zone → deep gorges, meltwater streams, rocky Himalayan terrain
• Landscape → increasingly dramatic → ice formations, steep ice walls, barren alpine environment
• Approach base camp → close views of Kanchenjunga massif → occasional distant avalanches
• Kanchenjunga North Base Camp (5,280m) → reach → explore and take in panoramic glacier views
• Return journey → descend back to Pang Pema → pass yak grazing in high alpine pastures
• Pang Pema → overnight stay

From Pang Pema, the trail continues upward toward the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp (5,280m). It is strenuous and physically challenging because of the high elevation, yet it has more and more dramatic landscapes of glaciers, rocky landscapes, and deep gorges inside the mountain, carved by meltwater streams that flow through the valley.

The closer we come to the base camp, the more radical and dramatic the landscape becomes, with huge ice structures and rocky Himalayan environs taking over the view. The slow stream of glacier water and ice movement contributes to the raw, untouched atmosphere feel of this highland area.

Closer to the Kanchenjunga massif and other mountain ranges, trekkers can see close-up shots of this massif and the other mountains, and even natural phenomena such as small avalanches in the distance, at the base camp. We then spend some time here and then go down to Pang Pema where we stay the night in a trekking lodge; on our way we pass by yaks grazing in the high alpine pastures.

**About Kanchanjunga Base Camp**

It (reached usually through Pang Pema) is the endpoint of the Kanchenjunga trekking trail and it is located at an altitude of approximately 5,280 meters. It is located at the base of the great mountain, Kanchenjunga (8,586m), the third-highest mountain in the world, with huge glaciers, steep ice cliffs, and spectacular Himalayan scenery. The place is incredibly isolated; there are no permanent settlements there, just those seasonally (trekkers, expedition teams).

The base camp provides the best possible perspective of the towering north face of Kanchenjunga, and other nearby mountains and retreating glaciers. The place is rough and wild, thin air, freezing winds, and natural phenomena such as little avalanches are elements contributing to its unprocessed beauty. Although it may be challenging to arrive at it, the base camp is regarded as the best part of the whole trip and a very strong and memorable Himalayan experience.

### Pang Pema to Khambachen: Mountain Views & Descent

• Pang Pema → start descent → long downhill route retracing steps toward Khambachen
• Trail → moraine terrain → ice-cut valleys → mix of gradual descent and short ascents
• Altitude drop → air becomes easier → vegetation slowly reappears along the route
• Mountain views → Kanchenjunga (8,586m), Wedge Peak (6,750m), Twins (7,351m) → shifting panoramic angles
• Scenery → same trail but changing perspectives → dramatic Himalayan landscape throughout descent
• Khambachen (4,100m) → arrive by afternoon → small high-altitude village surrounded by mountain walls
• Khambachen → lodge stay

The trail, leaving Pang Pema, leads off on a long downward path, as we retrace our tracks, heading down to Khambachen. The trail includes a gradual descent of the mountain combined with some brief ascents, through the moraine, ice-cut valleys, and ice-cut terrain. The faster we lose altitude, the easier we breathe and the landscape slowly becomes littered with vegetation once more.

On the trail, the trip back provides the panoramic perspective of high mountains like Kanchenjunga (8,586m, Wedge Peak (6, 750m), Twins (7,351m) and surrounding pyramid-shaped peaks. The shifting angles of the mountains create a sense of newness in the scenery even on the same trail and it creates a great impression of the magnitude of the Himalayas.

By late afternoon, we reach Khambachen (4,100m), a small high-altitude village, with spectacular mountain walls. This is a good rest place after a lengthy day of trekking and it also has lodging facilities and a view of the surrounding mountains. Trekking lodges are booked to have meals and an overnight stay.

It is located in a tranquil forested area with pine trees and mountain slopes providing a peaceful contrast to the higher alpine parts of the trek. The village boasts of the old stone houses and a serene environment which represent the simple mountain life of local people.

Phale is another significant tourist cultural site where trekkers can see the everyday culture of the Sherpa people, that are strongly affected by Tibetan Buddhist culture. Around the village, there are small monasteries, prayer flags and chortens that give the landscape a spiritual aspect. The path goes on by narrow tracks over the side of the hills with suspension bridges over the little streams and the raging Ghunsa Khola, many thousands of feet below in places. Falls, mossy rocks and shaded wood trails make this stretch scenic as well as refreshing though a bit rugged at some points.

At the end of the walk, we arrive at Amjilosa, a little secluded rest-house with simple trekking huts, where we have a quiet night-stop halfway along the wooded path.

**About Tamur river/ khola**

The Tamur River is a large river in eastern Nepal, which forms in the high Himalayan glaciers in the Taplejung region and flows southwards through the valley, forested and rural settlements. It cuts across the majority of the landscape in the lower Kanchenjunga trekking paths, traversing deep gorges, terraced hills and suspension bridges linking isolated villages. Not only is the river a significant natural element to trekkers as a landmark in the trekking trail, but also a natural resource to the local communities as it contributes to agriculture and day-to-day lives in the regions around the river.

**About Phoram**

It is a quite small village which is relatively bigger along the lower trekking trail on the Kanchenjunga region. It is a more open and settled place, with green hills and forested slopes, than the higher mountain villages with their typical rural life in east Nepal. Phoram, with its scenic background and less busy trails, is a significant destination of trekkers who come down the higher altitudes to lower valleys.

When they arrive in Kathmandu, the scenery changes from rural plains to an urban area, with the culture, heritage sites and urban life. This journey marks the conclusion of the trekking adventure, bringing travelers back from the remote Himalayas to the heart of Nepal, with lasting memories of the Kanchenjunga region.
