Trip Summary

Jomsom and Muktinath trekking is a premier trek in the Annapurna region, which is on the way to Mustang. Muktinath (3710m or 12172 ft) is a renowned pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists and a great trekking area for travelers. For Hindus, it is considered a sacred place of salvation, with the belief that bathing in the water here guarantees salvation after death. The Hindu god Brahma is thought to have lit the eternal flames that still burn at Muktinath, symbolizing freedom from karma. For Buddhists, it is significant as the place where the great sage Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) meditated, and it is also a source of fossilized ammonites, known locally as saligrams, found all along the upper reaches of the Kali Gandaki valley.

If you prefer a shorter trek, you can consider the Ghorepani Poonhill trek. The diverse flora and fauna of this region offer unexpected moments, with the chance to observe endangered species like musk deer, leopards, and spotted deer in beautiful pine and bamboo forests.

While trekking Jomsom and Muktinath, you'll pass through the Kali Gandaki Gorge, which is the deepest gorge in the world. Some travelers prefer to fly or drive to Jomsom (2743m or 8999 ft). Jomsom and Muktinath also serve as the main hub for the Thorong Pass and Upper Mustang trek. Enjoy natural hot springs in Tatopani, apple forests, and apple brandy in Marpha. Other highlights include beautiful Kagbeni, Dhaulagiri ice falls, unique Gurung and Thakali cultures, and stunning views of the Himalayas.

Fascinating Areas

Culturally and historically rich areas include picturesque villages and monasteries. The unique landscape and easy access with very few trekkers in the area are major highlights of this trip. Jomsom Muktinath trekking is among the few treks in Nepal that can be done throughout the year.
