Tibet is a traditional homeland of Tibetan people. It is also known as “Roof of the World”. Tibet is the highest elevation on earth with an average elevation of 4900 meters (1600ft). With its long and rich cultural history Tibetans have been able to safeguard their culture despite the existence of Chinese culture. People in here follow Buddhism and major of the Buddhist religion is originated from here. Buddhism is further divided into different branches like Hinayan, Mahayana and Bajrayan. Tibet is very important for Hindu pilgrims and they mostly come here to visit the sacred lake Mansarobar Kailash.
Overall Tibetan history is tumultuous, Tibet has spent some periods functioning as an independent entity and others ruled by powerful Mongolian and Chinese dynasties.
In 1950 China enforced thousands of troops to claim the region. After that some regions became Tibetan Autonomous Region and some were incorporated into neighboring Chinese provinces.
In 1959, anti-Chinese uprising failed and the 14th Dalai Lama fled to India as exile. Tibet’s monasteries were mostly destroyed during China’s Cultural Revolution in 1960s and 4970s. Thousands of Tibetans are believed to lose their life during the period of repression and martial law.
