Trip Summary

Trekking to the Upper Mustang restricted areas provides unexpected moments of your life, exploring various beautiful flora and fauna. This region includes amazing wildlife like red pandas, musk deer, and wild yaks in beautiful pine and bamboo forests. Upper Mustang Trekking is a famous trekking region in Nepal for its mystifying Tibetan culture and lifestyle in the remote Trans-Himalaya. You will see thousand-year-old monasteries, great mountain views, fifteenth-century caves, and much more.

Mustang, formerly the kingdom of Lo, Mantang lies at an altitude of 3840 meters in the northwest part, while Upper Mustang lies at an altitude of 4070 meters. The people are ethnic Tibetans and practice a form of Buddhism from the Sakya sect. Trekking to Upper Mustang takes you into the hidden world of the old Buddhist Kingdom. The culture here surprises travelers because they live in their own unique way, including the practice where all brothers marry a single girl.

Similarly, you can enjoy sightseeing with beautiful scenery, temples, and stupas of Kathmandu Valley. Upper Mustang Trek was a restricted demilitarized area until 1992 and is considered one of the most sacred areas of Nepal. Special permission must be obtained from the government of Nepal to visit these areas. It is considered a land where the soul of man is still as real as ever. The trek is enjoyable due to its isolation and beautiful landscape, taking you through high peaks, passes, glaciers, and alpine valleys. Sunrise Adventure Trek will make your Nepal trip exceptional.

The trek is highlighted by stunning mountains like Annapurna I (8091m). Your trip will end in Jomsom, and you can return to Pokhara by flight or drive. You will be surrounded by a total of 35 mountains, all of which are over 6000 meters.

After breakfast visit World Heritage Sites in the Kathmandu Valley which includes Swayambhunath Stupa / Monkey Temple, Bauddhanath Stupa, and Pashupatinath Temple. All of them offer many ancient architects, paintings, and statues built by the ancient royal kings of Nepal. Each and every monument reflects own legendary histories. Overnight stay in Hotel breakfast included.

First, we take our early breakfast and then 200 Km west of Kathmandu; we start off to Pokhara by a drive for our further journey. We will be passing through greeneries, villages, rivers, mountain ranges and beautiful farms during the 6 hrs drive to Pokhara. You can do adventures or relax in Pokhara in the evening. Pokhara is a very beautiful city known as heaven place of Nepal; here you get to collect very precious moments of your life. Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner and finally an overnight stay in trekking lodge.

We take a flight to Jomsom from Pokhara. It is a super scenic flight offering the close view of Mt. Annapurna and Dhaulagiri along with local settlements of people above the terraced fields. After we reach to Jomsom we trek to Kagbeni following Natural Rivers. Kagbeni is also a super scenic place, trekking to Kagbeni from Jomsom offers magnificent Himalayan views with warm environment of Himalayan people in Eaklibatti village at the bank of two rivers. Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner and finally an overnight stay in trekking lodge.

In this trek, we will need to check special permit and after that, we follow the river that leads up and down the hill. First, we check our permits, walk along the sides of Kaligandaki and raise up to the hill. Here we reach Tangbe village where we get a chance to explore the amazing orchards and barley fields. Now, we head to Chele crossing the river and huge red conglomerate and then finally reaching to Chele. Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner and finally an overnight stay in trekking lodge.

We head to Eklo Bhatti and climb Taklam La Pass (3,624m/11,923 ft) through plateaus and narrow stretches. During this time we are offered with the spectacular views of stunning mountains like Tilicho Peak, Yakawa Kang and Damodar Danda. We take rest in between enjoying the cool streams under the juniper tree. And we also pass through the famous cave, Ramchung Cave before reaching to Syangboche. Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner and finally an overnight stay in trekking lodge.

Firstly, having an early breakfast, we trek uphill to Yamda la (3850m/12667ft) and pass through a few tea houses and local houses built in Tibetan style. And before reaching Nyi Pass, we pass through dense forests and terraced fields. Now, passing the poplar trees, mountain passes and fields of barley we reach to Ghaymi, our next stay. Ghaymi is one of the biggest villages in Lho region. Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner and finally an overnight stay in trekking lodge.

Walking pleasantly after a breakfast and crossing the Ghaymi River the trek leads us to a plateau. From where we will have to pass through a long Mani wall made by Budhist followers. After hours of the trek, we arrive at village of Charang with willow trees and maze of fields. The long pathway is beautiful with amazing views of Tsarang La Pass at 3870m. Passing Tsarang La Pass, we reach Tsarang Village. The Charang Chu Canyon, huge fort and red Gompa towards its east are the best things to explore during this trek. Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner and finally an overnight stay in trekking lodge.

This time we trek to Lo-Manthang with magnificent views of peaks like Nilgiri, Tilicho, and Annapurna I and Bhrikuti. At first we descend by the Canyon, cross the river and then, we ascend to the Lo-Manthang valley through the Lo pass (3850m) but before that we get to see beautiful walled city in the Tibet. Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner and finally an overnight stay in trekking lodge.

Today we will be exploring around Lo-Manthang that includes the monasteries and local courts. You can even visit the “God house” the red thugvhen, Chyodi Gompa and The Entrance hall which are some of the main attraction in Lo-Manthang. Four-storey building of King’s palace including the panoramic views of the Himalayas is another attraction of this place. All of the gompas like Jhampa, Thupchen, and Chhoeda in this region have gone under expert restoration in the last two decades. Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner and finally an overnight stay in trekking lodge.

Taking different route for return journey, we pass from Gyakar village which is known for preserving 1200 years old Ghar Gompa. This place is famous for painting and locals believed that the wish you make comes true in here. Thus, we explore the Drakmar, make wishes and enjoying with the locals or simply passing by. Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner and finally an overnight stay in trekking lodge.

After 5-6 hours of trek we will reach Ghiling and pass the day by exploring around and admiring the locals. Ghiling is a dry path, trekking through this route offers the excellent views of Dhaulagiri ranges along with Mt. Nilgiri Evening time is best for exploration because of the dusty wind in the day time. Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner and finally an overnight stay in trekking lodge.

Trekking with Himalayas on our side we reach to Chhuksang after 5-6 hours of continuous walk, we take a halt and enjoy the stay in here. Trek impresses us through the amazing greenery and local cultures of people. Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner and finally an overnight stay in trekking lodge.

This is our last day trek from where we re-trek back to Jomsom and starting trek early is considered best to reach kagbeni and enjoy the surrounding once again. Following Mustang trail at first we trek to the trail of Annapurna Circuit. Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner and finally an overnight stay in trekking lodge.

From Jomsom we take flight to Pokhara. Time here in Pokhara can be spent relaxing or going up for adventure. Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner and finally an overnight stay in hotel.

We drive back to Kathmandu and enjoy the scenic views during the journey. After we reach at Kathmandu, take some rest or you can do some shopping in the rest of day. Join the evening meal and cultural program offer by the company.

  • Trekking Group Size

    We organize trekking in Dhaulagiri region for any number of people. If the group consists of more than 16 pax, we will split the group and arrange accordingly. We will assign one trek leader, one assistant leader for the group of four pax and porters (one porter between two members ) to carry members luggage. This arrangement ensures that the group can still go ahead as scheduled itinerary despite any member gets sick on the way in the trekking.
  • Experience and Health Requirements

    Upper Mustang trekking is considered a moderate trek suitable for those who can hike for 6 – 8 hours a day. Obviously hiking in the high altitude will not be so easy rather physically more demanding, however our itinerary is scheduled for the proper acclimatization while gradually gaining the altitude in the trekking. It will be advisable to have some walking and hiking or other outdoor activities for more than two weeks which will contribute to comfortable accomplishment in reaching Upper Mustang. No technical skills or use of crampons are required for this trekking. It is highly recommended for the trekkers to consult with the doctors before coming for this trekking. Trekkers who have asthma, allergy or any other diseases related to hurt, lungs should take more precaution for this trekking.
  • Travel Insurance

    Trekkers need to have traveling insurance which covers the comprehensive expenses that might incur due to medical issues or accidents (this includes air ambulance, helicopter rescue, and medical treatment costs). Insurance companies in Nepal do not provide travelling insurance for the foreigners and the trekkers need to get the travelling insurance from one of the international insurance companies. Sunrise Adventure Trek will have accident insurance for the trekking staff.
  • Accommodations

    Accommodation in Kathmandu will be arranged on twin sharing basis on BB plan except the extra cost for the single supplement (depending on the room availability ) according to the choice of the standard of the hotels before and after the trekking. Accommodation during the trekking will be arranged at standard teahouses/ lodges with unheated rooms with wooden beds and foam mattresses on twin sharing basis. The trekkers will have to share washing and toilet facilities. If the trekker is a solo traveler, he/she will have to share a room with the trekker of same sex.
  • Meals

    Trekkers are provided three meals a day (breakfast, lunch and dinner) during Upper Mustang trekking. They can enjoy wide variety of food from typical Nepali food, to all types of international cuisine. Unlike other trekking companies, Sunrise AdventureTrek allows trekkers to choose the food from the menu at the hotel / lodges in the trek. When the group is too big for the hotels/ lodges to provide individual dishes, set menu will be arranged in most places. We use the lodges / hotels which serve hygienic, nutritious and good food for the trekkers for them to get enough energy for the hiking.
  • Acclimatization

    Any trekker can get altitude sickness while trekking in the high altitude despite strong physically fitness. What is important is giving enough time for the proper acclimatization for the trekking. Sunrise Adventure Trek has planned the itinerary with gradual altitude gain giving enough time for acclimatization for the trekkers. Hiking slowly specially in the high altitude help prevent AMS ( Acute Mountain Sickness ). If anyone feels dizzy, suffer palpitation or severe headaches and loss of appetite, he / she will be moved to the lower altitude immediately or arrange the helicopter rescue in the severe case of AMS and the client has to pay for it.

    A variety of clothing is necessary for the Upper Mustang trek. While choosing the equipment trekkers need give emphasis on two simple aspects: Lightweight and Functional. The items should be lightweight, dependable, and adaptable to a variety of extreme weather conditions. The quality of the trekking equipment you choose has a lot to do with how warm, dry, and safe you will remain. For this reason you have to be critical of quality and the proper fit of clothing.

  • Porter Care

    We are strongly committed to the porters rights. We make sure that they are well paid and have the proper clothing, foot ware and shelter. We are aware that no porter should be asked to carry a load that is too heavy for their physical abilities and the weight limit should be adjusted for altitude, weather and trail condition. We request our members not to have more than 15 kg weight of luggage to give to the porters. Porters who become sick while in the trekking are treated with high priority just like the other trekking staff or the members. If needed helicopter is sent and rescued in case of sever condition of sickness or accident. All porters are insured for sickness and accident.
  • Season

    Nepal, as a tourist destination is good for all seasons, however, the best seasons for trekking to Dhaulagiri region are Spring (March – May) and Autumn (mid Sept. – mid Dec. ). Trekking in autumn season is noted for clear weather and excellent views of silvery mountains against blue sky. It gets colder towards the end of December. This trek can be done in any month except January and February.
