Dolpo Shey Phoksundo Trek

Dolpo Shey Phoksundo Trek is truly one of the most beautiful tourist destinations in Nepal. You can see Nepal’s deepest mesmerizing deep-blue Lake, Phoksundo Lake.  We can see Tsowa monastery on the east bank of Phoksundo Lake where settlers of Phoksundo still worships the deity who is believed to live there. The southern bank has village of Ringmo and we can take close look of traditional Bonpo culture. Shey Phoksundo National Park is popular for preserving wilderness. Other highlights includes Kanjiroba, Dhaulagiri Massif and the greenish blue lake which many tourists.  Explore worlds natural wonder sites surrounded by stunning snow capped mountains.

We start our trip by taking flight to Kathmandu and then again taking another flight to Juphal. From Juphal, we start our first trek. We feel cold crispy air once we are in high altitude and start to trek to Dunai and then to Chepka. Along the trek, we pass Shey Phoksundo National Park and check our registration and then walk across rivers. We reach Sunduwa and passing through green pasture overlooking high peaks, we take another trek to Ringmo. The trail is rocky and gets to see the first glimpse of Shey Phoksundo Lake once we are in Ringmo. Ringmo lies on the bank of Shey Phoksundo Lake and houses around 20 Tibetan style looking houses which are surrounded by scattered cairns and chortens.

Settlers of Ringmo village are strict followers of nonviolence and truly refrain from any kind of animal sacrifices. They are also very traditional and simple without any modernization. Next day, we either hike to Lake Viewpoint or take hike to the waterfall. Both the destination is stunning and you feel like you are in heaven or at least the environment and the feeling is certainly different. After visiting the main destination, we trek back to the civilization of Kathmandu and once we reach Kathmandu, you can join small cultural dinner show.

Itinerary

Our airport representative picks you up from airport and transfers you to hotel for further briefing about the upcoming trip. In the evening, a small meeting shall be held to discuss and prepare for the trek. And after meeting you can roam around Thamel to get familiar with environment and location.

Today, we fly to Nepalgunj – Nepalgunj is located in South Western Nepal, in Terai region near to Indian Border. It is famous for Bageshowri Temple of Hindus and richshaw/cycle ride. The settlement somewhat resembles India and we reach horse cart full of colorful people after leaving the busy Bazaar. Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner and finally an overnight stay in trekking lodge.

The flight to Juphal is always set early in the morning and it is normal for delayed or postpone of flight due to bad weather. Strong wind blows form Mahabharat range in the day and evening, so we take 7-9 seated plane flight. From Juphal, we start our first trek to Dunai through Dalit village, for first 2 hours, we take steep downhill and continue along the right side of Bheri River to reach Dunai – it is the headquarter of Dolpa. Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner and finally an overnight stay in trekking lodge.

We cross the suspension bridge over Bheri River in Dunai and continue toward Suligad. We check our registration in Shey Phoksundo National Park office and trek upriver through shrubs. We cross a wooden bridge at Kageni and continue uphill to a wide riverside. We gradually climb on the shade of Maple, Oak and Pine and then quickly descend to wood crossing. Afterward, a strenuous one and half hour leads us to Chepka. Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner and finally an overnight stay in trekking lodge.

Get ready for ultimate stamina test! The trek covers 3 major uphill and downhill at places where the gorge run deep and narrow. For the first 2 hours, the trek is comfortable, we pass through giant pines, oaks, maple, walnut and Birches. The trail at Reiji has a lone abandoned bungalow and a camping site but we continue our upriver trail by crossing a smaller rivulet and reach boarding at Sunduwa. Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner and finally an overnight stay in trekking lodge.

Our trek for today is short and most exhilarating, we cross altitude of 3000 meters and pass though narrow and steep loose soil and hard rocks. The vegetation drastically changes with appearance of sparse Juniper shrubs and cypresses. We take steep climb and reach waterfall viewpoint for amazing view. We walk about 25 minutes to reach camp site. Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner and finally an overnight stay in trekking lodge.

Ringmo village lies at the bank of Shey Phoksundo Lake and around 20 Tibetan style houses form a close knit fashion which is surrounded by Chortens and cairns. The settlers here are B’onpos who are followers of B’on tradition. The lifestyle of villagers is traditional and simple who are strict believers of nonviolence. Also, there is an old B’on monastery in Ringmo which has chortens at the entrance and decorated by horns of Blue Sheep or Himalayan Thar. You can see a small museum and local Lama guides you around the monastery and tells you history of the B’on. Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner and finally an overnight stay in trekking lodge.

We have two options for today: We take climb to about 200 meters above the village for amazing view of small “r” shaped Shey Phoksundo Lake. The hike passes though the Yak Deep point as featured in Eric Valley’s “CARAVAN” and though the groves of pine and taking steep climb upward. Halfway through Sunduwa and Ringmo has amazing and majestic waterfall. The waterfall looks like a giant cotton ball making thunderous landing about 100 feet below. There is rich and thick vegetation of pine forest around the waterfall and we can see animals like Musk Deer, Blue Sheep, Himalayan Thars and sometimes Snow Leopards. Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner and finally an overnight stay in trekking lodge.

We take steep downhill hike to Chepka. The hike sometimes offers lone Lammergier (with wingspan of 9-10 feet) on the top of the ridge. Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner and finally an overnight stay in trekking lodge.

Today’s hike is easy with no any uphill or torturous downhill except for the 2 and half hour of continuous walk to Juphal. Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner and finally an overnight stay in trekking lodge.

We take early morning flight to Nepalgunj from Juphal. Upon reaching Nepalgunj, we take lunch, fill our stomach and take next flight to Kathmandu. After you arrive at Kathmandu, you can take rest for a while and in the evening, you can take cultural dinner show. Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and finally an overnight stay in hotel. Attend the evening dinner and cultural program provided by the company.

Trip to the Himalayas concludes. Our airport representative drops you off to the airport approximately 3 hours prior to your scheduled flight. Along the way to your home, you can relive the moment shared with Himalaya and Himalayans.

  • Trekking Group Size

    We organize trekking in Kanchenjunga region for any number of people. If the group consists of more than 16 pax, we will split the group and arrange accordingly. We will assign one trek leader, one assistant leader for the group of four pax and porters (one porter between two members ) to carry members luggage. This arrangement ensures that the group can still go ahead as scheduled itinerary despite any member gets sick on the way in the trekking.
  • Experience and Health Requirements

    Kanchenjunga trekking is considered a moderate trek suitable for those who can hike for 5 – 7 hours a day. Obviously hiking in the high altitude will not be so easy rather physically more demanding, however our itinerary is scheduled for the proper acclimatization while gradually gaining the altitude in the trekking. It will be advisable to have some walking and hiking or other outdoor activities for more than two weeks which will contribute to comfortable accomplishment in reaching Kanchenjunga No technical skills or use of crampons are required for this trekking. It is highly recommended for the trekkers to consult with the doctors before coming for this trekking. Trekkers who have asthma, allergy or any other diseases related to hurt, lungs should take more precaution for this trekking.
  • Travel Insurance

    Trekkers need to have traveling insurance which covers the comprehensive expenses that might incur due to medical issues or accidents (this includes air ambulance, helicopter rescue, and medical treatment costs). Insurance companies in Nepal do not provide travelling insurance for the foreigners and the trekkers need to get the travelling insurance from one of the international insurance companies. Sunrise Adventure Trek will have accident insurance for the trekking staff.
  • Accommodations

    Accommodation in Kathmandu will be arranged on twin sharing basis on BB plan except the extra cost for the single supplement (depending on the room availability ) according to the choice of the standard of the hotels before and after the trekking. Accommodation during the trekking will be arranged at standard teahouses/ lodges with unheated rooms with wooden beds and foam mattresses on twin sharing basis. The trekkers will have to share washing and toilet facilities. If the trekker is a solo traveler, he/she will have to share a room with the trekker of same sex.
  • Meals

    Trekkers are provided three meals a day (breakfast, lunch and dinner) during Kanchenjunga trekking. They can enjoy wide variety of food from typical Nepali food, Tibetan food to all types of international cuisine (Continental, Italian, and Indian.). Unlike other trekking companies, Sunrise AdventureTrek allows trekkers to choose the food from the menu at the hotel / lodges in the trek. When the group is too big for the hotels/ lodges to provide individual dishes, set menu will be arranged in most places. We use the lodges / hotels which serve hygienic, nutritious and good food for the trekkers for them to get enough energy for the hiking.
  • Acclimatization

    Any trekker can get altitude sickness while trekking in the high altitude despite strong physically fitness. What is important is giving enough time for the proper acclimatization for the trekking. Sunrise Adventure Trek has planned the itinerary with gradual altitude gain giving enough time for acclimatization for the trekkers. Hiking slowly specially in the high altitude help prevent AMS ( Acute Mountain Sickness ). If anyone feels dizzy, suffer palpitation or severe headaches and loss of appetite, he / she will be moved to the lower altitude immediately or arrange the helicopter rescue in the severe case of AMS and the client has to pay for it.

    A variety of clothing is necessary for the Kanchenjunga trek. While choosing the equipment trekkers need give emphasis on two simple aspects: Lightweight and Functional. The items should be lightweight, dependable, and adaptable to a variety of extreme weather conditions. The quality of the trekking equipment you choose has a lot to do with how warm, dry, and safe you will remain. For this reason you have to be critical of quality and the proper fit of clothing.

  • Porter Care

    We are strongly committed to the porters rights. We make sure that they are well paid and have the proper clothing, foot ware and shelter. We are aware that no porter should be asked to carry a load that is too heavy for their physical abilities and the weight limit should be adjusted for altitude, weather and trail condition. We request our members not to have more than 15 kg weight of luggage to give to the porters. Porters who become sick while in the trekking are treated with high priority just like the other trekking staff or the members. If needed helicopter is sent and rescued in case of sever condition of sickness or accident. All porters are insured for sickness and accident
  • Season

    Nepal, as a tourist destination is good for all seasons, however, the best seasons for trekking to Kanchenjunga region are Spring (March – May) and Autumn (mid Sept. – mid Dec. ). Trekking in autumn season is noted for clear weather and excellent views of silvery mountains against blue sky. It gets colder towards the end of December. This trek can be done in any month except January and February.
