Upper Mustang was once an independent kingdom, although closely tied by language and culture to Tibet. Foreign visitors have been allowed into the region since 1992, but tourism to Upper Mustang is regulated. Throughout the year, many tourists visit Upper Mustang. Driving from Kathmandu to Pokhara is 200 kilometers west and takes 6 hours. There are two ways of transport from Pokhara to Jomsom: flight and driving. Driving takes 7 hours, while a flight takes 25 minutes. Taking an early morning flight gives close-up views of Mt. Annapurna range, Nilgiri, and Dhaulagiri. After reaching Jomsom, you can move toward Kagbeni, which is 2820m above sea level, enjoying the beautiful view of the massive peaks, including Mt. Dhaulagiri, Tukche, and the awesome mountains above Kagbeni.
From Kagbeni, you can walk to Chele, which takes 6-7 hours. The journey involves crossing the Kali Gandaki River and climbing steeply up the rocky valley to reach Chele. From Chele, at 3800m, the path climbs a steep spur and passes a steep canyon, reaching Samar after 6-7 hours. From Samar, it takes 5 hours to reach Syangboche, 3550m. From Syangboche, it takes another 4 hours to reach Charang, 3570m, and finally, from Tsarang (Charang), a 3.5-hour hike to Lo Mangtang, where you can explore the fascinating city of Lo Mangtang.
From Lomantang to Dhakmar (3820m) via Marang la (4300m), the journey continues on the highland route. It is a fairly flat route with some climbs to Ghargumpu, where you can experience the pure virtue of the Lo Nyingma Sect Scripture of Padmasambhava. Descend steeply into an eroded alley to Dhakmar. From Dhakmar to Gelling (3580m), a 4-5 hour hike, you can explore a village rich in culture with a great old monastery. The route from Gelling to Chele involves descending and ascending the same way as before, with more downhill than uphill sections, and some flat and gradually sloping paths. From Chele, you retrace your steps back to Kathmandu.
